For those people unsure...

of the current Traffic 4 England 'free' status. The application is in its 'trial' phase, where you get to use it for free if you want. By the end of the year this trial phase will terminate and Traffic4England will no longer be available for free on the Android Market place.

For those that are unclear, we didn't make Traffic4England free for a limited time to 'trick' people into downloading it. We made it available for free to gather user feedback about its usefulness, and for people to get an opportunity to see if it was the type of product that would be useful to them.

If people are confused by the time limited nature of the product, we suggest that they uninstall it and use one of the other traffic apps on the marketplace.

  1. So if I download it in the free trial period does that version remain free-to-use for me after the end of the free time? I understand that downloading a new version would cost me later on.

  2. What we're doing here is to offer the app to use for free for a period of time that ends at the end of the year.

The idea is that you get to try before you buy, and we get feedback about features and stability.

The app uses our own back-end infrastructure which we have to pay for. So even if the app is free, we're actually paying for you to use it.

The idea is also to add new features like live traffic cameras and add the things that people have been suggesting on the marketplace, enhanced search for example.

However we have to pay licensing costs to add the traffic cameras etc, so if people want a better product, or just for the existing product to continue, there's a cost involved.

If you checkout TrafficTV on iPhone, there's a one off charge of £39.99 which we think is a bit steep, but that's what mxdata have been able to charge in the past with little competition on other handsets. So any one off charge for traffic4england would be in line with normal android marketplace prices, not overinflated like TrafficTv.

So we're looking to charge a reasonable price so that we can add features to make the product even more useful and pay for ongoing development. (We already have lots of ideas and plans for extra things to add).

So back to the original question. At the end of the free time, we'll effectively take the free version out of service and off the marketplace.
